City councilor, school board leader Harry Butler dies at 69

Harry Bulter

Grand Junction City Councilor and School District 51 Board Member Harry Butler died Sunday night of apparent natural causes.

Butler, 69, was found around 5 p.m. Sunday by a neighbor, unresponsive on the ground in the backyard of a rental property he owned, police spokeswoman Kate Porras said in a news release late Sunday.

The neighbor started and attempted CPR as police and paramedics were called to the scene, but they were unable to revive him, according to the release.

The city is expected to release more information on Monday.

Butler had previously served on the Grand Junction City Council from 2001 to 2005 and was re-elected in April. He served on the board of education for eight years and his term was scheduled to expire this November.

“Mr. Butler was a beloved member of the community and he will be missed,” the release said.
