CMU announces six finalists for football coach
Colorado Mesa University released its finalists for the head football coach position.
The finalists include three Division I assistant coaches, a former Division II head coach, RMAC assistant coach and an NAIA head coach. The six will be brought to campus through next week and an announcement is expected as soon as Jan. 17.
Pat Behrns was the former head coach at Division II Nebraska-Omaha before it dropped the football program in March. He was 130-68 at UNO and has more than 23 years of head coaching experience. He was the University of North Dakota head coach from 1980-86.
Matt Entz is the defensive line coach at the University of Northern Iowa. He was the defensive coordinator at Division II Winona State (Minn.) University from 2002 to 2009 and received the AFCA assistant coach of the year award in 2008.
Dan Hammerschmidt is a wide receiver/passing game coordinator at Colorado State University. He was also an assistant at Wyoming and Rice.
Russ Martin has been the Nebraska-Kearney offensive coordinator and quarterback coach the past eight seasons. During that period, the Lopers have averaged 33 points and 410 yards per game.
Ed Meierkoft is the former head coach at the University of South Dakota and led the Coyotes as they transitioned to Division I status in 2007.
Steve Ryan has led Morningside (Iowa) College to eight straight NAIA playoff appearances, including seven straight teams ranked in the top 10.
