After opening the season with a convincing victory over Simon Fraser University, the Colorado Mesa University women’s basketball team caught the eye of Division II coaches around the country.

The Mavericks received 21 votes in this week’s USA Today Division II women’s basketball national rankings and are listed in the “receiving votes” category. CMU, 2-0, plays its home opener at 5 p.m. Friday against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist at Brownson Arena.

Metro State, which was No. 7 in the preseason rankings, fell to No. 24 after a 1-2 start. Fort Lewis received 36 votes and CSU-Pueblo 17.
