Colorado Mesa cycling teams win at nationals

The Colorado Mesa University cycling team got off to a great start to the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships on Friday in Richmond, Va.
Both the men’s and women’s teams won their Division II team time trial races with impressive rides.
The men finished the 19-mile course in 41 minutes, 49.56 seconds, beating Mars Hill University, which finished in second with a time of 42.09.10.
For the CMU women, it was a very impressive victory considering they only ride with three riders when the other teams use four.
Riders will alternate riding at the front and fall back to let the next rider doing the bulk of the work while the other riders tuck in behind in an aerodynamic drafting position. It’s normally an advantage to had four riders.
The three CMU riders — Ariane Horbach, Lexie Millard and Ariana Dittmer – posted a winning time of 48:40.61. Massachusetts Institute of Technology was second at 49:19.08.
The victories by the two teams puts the Mavericks in good shape to win its first-ever road cycling national championship.
The criterium will be held today with Horbach a favorite to contend for a national title.
On Sunday, the championships will conclude with the road race.
The team championship will be determined by the combined performances of the men and women’s races.
The Mavericks are also poised to win their second straight overall Division II cycling national championships, which takes into account all five cycling disciplines for the 2013-14 season.
CMU’s Spencer Oswald also raced in the individual time trial and placed second with a time of 42:36.54. Yale’s Erik Levinsohn posted a 41:47.94 to win the race.
Oswald was the only CMU cyclist to ride the individual time trial.
