Colorado Mesa wrestlers win 11th straight dual

Colorado Mesa University overcame two overtime losses in matches to pick up its 11th consecutive dual victory.

The 10th-ranked Mavericks (16-1, 2-0 RMAC) won six matches, two by pin, to defeat Colorado State University-Pueblo 24-14 in an RMAC wrestling dual Wednesday night at Massari Arena in Pueblo.

“It was not too bad,” CMU coach Chuck Pipher said of the victory. “We lost a couple overtimes we didn’t like losing.”

CSU-Pueblo’s Jesse Hillhouse (20-3), ranked No. 1 at 125 pounds, defeated Mesa freshman Jonathon Stelling 12-3 to begin the dual.

“Jonathon wrestled him tough,” Pipher said. “He was down 6-3 and was about to get pinned in the third. He wrestled a little conservative, but that’s OK. For a freshman, he wrestled tough.”

Mesa senior Tyler Nelson quickly turned the dual in Mesa’s favor, pinning Jacob Haney in 2:21 at 133 pounds. Sophomore Drew Schumann (16-8) followed with a pin of Adam Ortivez in 5:38 at 141.

“Drew was losing 3-0 in the third,” Pipher said. “The (CSU-Pueblo) kid took bottom, and Drew pinned him.”

Sophomore James Martinez and No. 2-ranked Jon Gappmaier (10-2) won decisions to push Mesa’s lead to 18-4.

CSU-Pueblo returning national qualifier Trevor Grant ended the Mavs’ run with a 12-0 victory at 165 over Tyler Miles. Miles wrestled in place of Chester Granard, who was ill. Granard won’t wrestle tonight when the Mavericks host Division I Northern Colorado at
7 p.m. at Brownson Arena.

Mesa’s Nick Petersen and Jordan Passehl clinched the victory with decisions at 184 and 197 pounds.

Mesa’s Zak Slotten (174) and heavyweight Paco Retana lost overtime decisions.
