Colorado Mesa men’s soocer team picked 5th, women’s team 7th in RMAC
Last season, the men’s soccer team at Colorado Mesa University took a big step, reaching the RMAC tournament. This season, the Mavericks are picked to finish fifth in the conference in a poll of the coaches.
The women’s team, which struggled through a three-win conference season in 2010, is picked to finish seventh.
Colorado School of Mines is the odds-on favorite to win the men’s conference championship, with Fort Lewis second. Mines received eight of the nine first-place votes; Metro State received the other and is picked third, followed by Regis.
No Colorado Mesa men’s players made the preseason all-conference team.
Samantha Burneo, a sophomore midfielder/defender, made the women’s preseason all-RMAC team from Colorado Mesa.
Fort Lewis received eight of 11 first-place votes and is favored to win the championship again, followed by Regis, which got the other three first-place votes, Colorado Mines and Metro State.
Both Colorado Mesa teams open the season Sept. 1 in California. The men play at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the women face Minot State (N.D.) in San Bernardino.
