Cops: Woman, 19, confessed to fatal stabbing

A 19-year-old woman admitted to police she retrieved a knife from her kitchen following a fight, then stabbed a man who later died from his injury, according to an arrest affidavit.

According to unredacted court documents obtained by The Daily Sentinel, Amy Ann Adamson Gonzalez at first denied that an altercation had taken place outside her apartment at Monument Ridge Town Homes, 2680 B 1/2 Road, before changing her story.

“She said she did not mean to kill him and did not think he was hurt very bad,” the affidavit said.

The affidavit said she told police she hid the knife in a snowbank next to her residence.

“When she found out that (Ramon) Sandoval was dead, she took the knife from the snowbank and threw it into an open field south of the apartment complex,” the affidavit said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Grand Junction police said the weapon had not been recovered.

The affidavit does not speak to a motive. Sandoval and Adamson Gonzalez were among five people present during an altercation that started in front of Adamson Gonzalez’s apartment, late Friday or in the predawn hours of Saturday.

Sandoval, 20, was discovered dead in the parking lot of the complex around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

County Court Judge Gretchen Larsen on Tuesday set bond at $250,000 for Adamson Gonzalez, who appeared in court via video from the Mesa County Jail.

District Attorney Pete Hautzinger told the judge that Adamson Gonzalez is eligible to be prosecuted as a habitual criminal, which Hautzinger noted is “unusual for a 19-year-old.” She has a pair of felony convictions for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and criminal mischief.

Hautzinger didn’t commit about pressing habitual criminal charges.

Adamson Gonzalez is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in Sandoval’s death. Formal charges are expected to be filed next Tuesday.
