Cops work to ID body found in canal

Authorities on Tuesday were looking into whether a body found in a Delta County canal a day earlier is that of a Montrose man missing since last summer.

The Montrose County Coroner’s Office performed on autopsy on the body to try to determine the cause and manner of death, although the results weren’t immediately released.

Delta County Undersheriff Mark Taylor said a ditch rider inspecting canals Monday afternoon found a “pretty well decomposed” body underneath a bridge on Colorado Highway 348.

Taylor said he doesn’t know whether the body is that of a man or woman or whether foul play was involved in the person’s death.

“There really isn’t anything that we can determine at this point,” he said.

Authorities believe the body may be that of Montrose resident Abe Martinez, who was last seen at his brother’s home in Olathe last August. Authorities, who notified Martinez’s family of the discovery, had searched extensively for Martinez last summer and fall in the vicinity of where the body was discovered.
