County has made strides in some areas

Diabetes —having a raised level of glucose in the blood — has trended upward in Mesa County. In the 2009-10 time frame. 7.2 percent of Mesa County residents were diagnosed with diabetes.

All isn’t negative about Mesa County’s showing in the comprehensive “Healthy Mesa County 2012-2017” study.

There are a number of segments of the community health profile where Mesa County is faring better than the rest of the state, many of which are related to hospitalization rates. The rates are based on a population of 100,000.

■ Total injury hospitalizations — Mesa County 563.1, Colorado 660.9

■ Total unintentional injury hospitalizations — Mesa County 386.8, Colorado 472.7

■ Poisoning hospitalizations — Mesa County 24.9, Colorado 34.3

■ Falls resulting in hospitalization — Mesa County 219.9, Colorado 286.3

■ Influenza hospitalizations in people aged 65 or older — Mesa County 37.4, Colorado 62.7

■ Gonorrhea, in people aged 15 to 29 years — Mesa County 62.9, Colorado 229.0
