Crime study: Grand Valley climbs in annual safety rankings
An annual statistical analysis of crime ranks Grand Junction and Mesa County third safest among metropolitan areas in Colorado, trailing Greeley and Boulder.
The “CQ Press City Crime Rankings 2011–2012” report, which was released last week, ranked what it considered to be the Grand Junction metropolitan area as 104th safest among 354 metropolitan areas in the nation. Boulder ranked 24th, followed by Greeley at 59th. Denver-Aurora ranked 177th, while Pueblo was 260th.
In 2010, the study ranked the Grand Junction metropolitan area 142nd.
Logan, Utah, ranked as the nation’s safest metropolitan area in 2011, while Detroit, Mich., was pegged by the study as the most dangerous. Fourteen metropolitan areas were not ranked because crime data for those areas were not included in the annual 2010 FBI uniform crime report.
The study relied on numbers for reported murder, forcible rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and motor-vehicle theft as included in the FBI’s annual uniform crime report.
For the purposes of the study, the Grand Junction metropolitan area consisted of crime data for all of Mesa County.
