D51 calendar meetings Thursday

Four school calendar options for 2013-14 will be available for public perusal and discussion Thursday at open houses hosted by School District 51.

Open houses will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at four locations: Bookcliff Middle School, Palisade High School, Pomona Elementary School and Shelledy Elementary School.

Committee members have presented eight calendar options to District 51 School Board members, including a calendar similar to the 2012-13 calendar, a calendar that starts school one week earlier, a calendar that shortens the summer but adds longer breaks throughout the school year, and four-day school week calendars with varying school day and school year lengths. Open house participants are invited to ask questions about each calendar at the meetings and write their opinions about the various calendar scenarios on comment cards.

School Board members informally decided at a meeting Tuesday night to present four of the calendar scenarios at Thursday’s open houses: the calendar that resembles the current calendar but with a start date one week earlier on Aug. 12, a four-day week calendar with an eight-and-a-half hour work day for staff, a four-day week calendar with an eight-and-a-quarter hour work day for staff, and the five-day week option with a shortened summer.

Each scenario starts school in July or August but all end the school year in May, either on May 16, 22 or 29. Calendar committee member Bob Corneille, a Fruita Monument High School counselor, said the committee was hesitant to push into June because that month is typically full of camps and the Junior College World Series.

The calendar options on display Thursday are all draft suggestions and it is possible none of them will make the final cut when the school board decides on the calendar this spring.
