DA: Colorado Springs officer justified in shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS — Prosecutors say a police officer was justified when she shot and wounded a man at a Colorado Springs home.

The District Attorney’s Office ruled Friday that officer Allison Detwiler’s decision to shoot 61-year-old Chester Dean on May 30 was “reasonable, appropriate and justified.”

The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1jvWPaR ) officers responded to Dean’s home after reports that the man was suicidal. Detwiler shot him in the hip after he allegedly opened fire on two witnesses nearby.

Dean, a former American Legion chaplain, was arrested on suspicion of more than a dozen crimes, including attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer. He is being held at the El Paso County jail on $500,000 bail.
