DEA agents targeting cartel find 41 pounds of meth in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities say they “decimated” a Mexican cartel drug cell controlling Utah when they seized millions of dollars’ worth of methamphetamine in Salt Lake City.
Drug Enforcement Administration Frank Smith tells the Deseret News agents had been preparing for the bust for several months. Officials say they surrounded two suspect vehicles Monday afternoon in a Lowe’s parking lot.
Agents say three people were arrested, while one other person remains at large.
Smith said the 41 pounds of meth seized Monday were likely smuggled across the Mexican border in car panels. He says some of the drugs were in flat packets and had been sewn into suitcases.
A yearlong investigation into Sinaloa Cartel operations connected to Utah has yielded more than 300 pounds of meth and more than 30 arrests so far.
