Death of man at Vega Reservoir probed

State and local authorities are investigating the death of a 67-year-old Orchard Mesa man who was found Thursday afternoon floating face down in shallow water at Vega Reservoir.

Colorado State Parks spokeswoman Deb Frazier said the man, who was accompanied by his brother and other family members, had been fishing off the shore of the south side of the reservoir when he was observed unresponsive, in the water, around 1:10 p.m.

“He really loved fishing, which was apparently a family activity,” Frazier said.

Plateau Valley firefighters, Colorado State Parks rangers and Mesa County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to what initially was reported as a possible drowning.

The victim at one point was pulled from the water, and others were attempting CPR, according to police-radio reports.

A St. Mary’s Hospital helicopter was called to the scene, but was canceled and returned back to the hospital about 10 minutes into its flight.

The man was found in water approximately ankle to mid-thigh high, Frazier said. Foul play is not suspected.

“Staff at Vega and Colorado State Parks reaches out to the family with comfort and expressions of support for this tragic death,” Frazier said in a prepared statement.
