Del Norte truck driver cited in fatal accident
The Colorado State Patrol has cited a Del Norte man on suspicion of careless driving causing death after he allegedly ran a red light in a logging truck Tuesday, striking a vehicle driven by a Glenwood Springs woman.
The State Patrol said John H. Briggs, 58, was driving a Peterbilt semi truck hauling a log-loaded trailer east on Highway 82 just east of Glenwood Springs when he went though the light at Garfield County Road 154. The truck struck the driver’s side door of a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Claudia DeRamirez, 24, who was making a left turn onto the highway.
DeRamirez initially had been identified as Glenwood resident Gabriela Tena Dechavez, 31, based on an expired Colorado identification card that was in DeRamirez’s possession, the State Patrol said. Dechavez and DeRamirez are sisters.
DeRamirez was wearing her seatbelt and Briggs was not, the State Patrol said. It said alcohol, drugs and speed were not considered factors in the crash.
