Dems’ mailer uses reverse spin, likely to siphon votes from Tipton

A mailer from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that attacks Libertarian candidate Gregory Gilman seems mostly geared to drive conservative voters toward Gilman and away from Republican Scott Tipton.

Tipton and incumbent U.S. Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., are battling in the competitive 3rd Congressional District, which Salazar has represented for three terms, despite Republicans’ slight registration edge in the district.

“Gregory Gilman wants to drastically reduce the size of government,” the mailer says, going on to note Gilman “believes the government’s powers are limited to those specifically mentioned in the Constitution.

“Don’t let Gregory Gilman and the Tea Party hold our country back.”

One recipient of the mailer, Erik Groves, an election-law attorney who also teaches political science at Mesa State College, said the mailer seems designed to drive away votes from Tipton to Gilman.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee didn’t return phone calls for comment Friday.

Groves called the mailer “lowball American politics at its worst. What other nefarious things is Gilman going to do when he gets to Congress? Support the troops? Not cheat on his wife?”

The ad, though, misses the point of his campaign, Gilman said.

“My campaign is unique because it appeals to both the left and right,” Gilman said in an e-mail Friday. “I’m the only candidate who believes in personal freedom and economic freedom.”

Another recipient of the mailer, Reford Theobold, said the approach surprised him.

“It’s an interesting strategy,” Theobold said. “They can’t find a way to build support for Salazar, so they try to get Republicans to support the Libertarian. I’ve never seen something like that around here before.”

Gilman said he was a bit bemused by the mailer.

“I probably should thank the DCCC for the free advertisement,” Gilman said.
