Doctor barred from writing prescriptions

A Montrose doctor under federal investigation cannot prescribe medications, according to a recent restriction placed on his Colorado’s medical license.

Dr. Sam Jahani, who operated offices in Grand Junction, Delta and Montrose, cannot possess or distribute prescription drugs in lieu of having his medical license suspended, according to a signed Dec. 15 agreement between Jahani and the State Board of Medical Examiners.

Jahani’s GJ Urgent Care office, 517 N. First St., on Tuesday listed on its marquee that the office is closed.

Jahani’s Grand Junction office was raided by federal agents, and patients’ medical files were taken Oct. 14 by officers with the Drug Enforcement Administration. An affidavit revealing the reasons for the raid has been under seal.

Other offices run by Jahani and Dr. Eric Peper in Delta and Montrose were raided during that time. No arrests have been made in the case.

A voice-mailbox was full Tuesday for Jahani’s Montrose Urgent Care office, 2305 South Townsend Ave. Attempts to call Jahani’s Delta office, 164 W. Third St., were greeted with busy signals throughout the day.

According to the state document, Jahani’s license was reviewed because the ongoing investigation “raised concerns that the Respondent (Jahani) may not be able to practice medicine with reasonable skill and safety to patients.”

Jahani cannot “administer, possess, dispense, or otherwise authorize prescriptions for, any controlled substances…. or through any third party including but not limited to physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners or other physicians,” the document says.

The stipulation is in effect for the duration of the investigation.

A Colorado medical license for Peper is active with conditions, which is unchanged since the offices were raided in October.

Colorado state records indicate Jahani has an active medical license to practice in Texas, and it is set to expire in 2011. Jahani has admitting privileges at Delta County Memorial Hospital and is the medical director at Willow Tree Nursing Home, 2050 S. Main St., Delta, according to state records.

Jahani was first issued a medical license in Colorado in 2000 and renewed his Colorado license June 6.

His license is next set for renewal May 31, 2011.
