DOW honors ‘champion of sportsmen’

The Colorado Division of Wildlife this week is honoring the legacy of former longtime Denver Post outdoors writer Charlie Meyers by dedicating on Saturday a section of Spinney Mountain State Wildlife Area in Park County in his name.

A section of the South Platte River, commonly referred to as the “Dream Stream,” will be renamed the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area.

The dedication ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday along the South Platte River at Park County Road 59 south of Fairplay on U.S. Highway 24 via Park County Road 23.

This section of the South Platte is nationally known as one of the country’s top trout-fishing destinations.

“It is fitting that this spectacular property was chosen by the wildlife commission to honor Charlie,” said Tom Remington, Division of Wildlife director.

“Charlie was a champion for sportsmen and the wildlife resources we all cherish,” Remington said. “We look forward to commemorating all he accomplished for hunters and anglers, and the marvelous way he told their stories.”

Meyers, who died in January after battling cancer, was a lifelong hunter and angler and spent his 40-year career passionately advocating for preserving wildlife and wildlife habitat.

He often wrote about the South Platte and Spinney Mountain Reservoir.

The ceremony will feature several of Meyers’ friends, family and Division of Wildlife staff members speaking about Meyers’ life and what made him a much-respected figure in the sporting community.

The state wildlife area features a kiosk highlighting some of Meyers’ accomplishments and includes recollections from his friends and family.

Saturday evening, Colorado Trout Unlimited will host “Fish On: An Evening of Storytelling honoring Charlie Meyers” at the American Safari Ranch in Fairplay.

The event features storytellers, live music and a barbecue. Tickets are $100 with proceeds going to the Trout Unlimited program “Trout in the Classroom.”

Reservations and information on the day’s events are available at and meyers.
