Driver arrested in fatal accident during pullover
A New Castle man has turned himself to authorities and faces charges including manslaughter in the Aug. 16 death of a motorist struck and killed on Interstate 70 near Silt after being pulled over by a Colorado State Patrol trooper.
A warrant was issued Friday for Jeffrey Burk, 31, who subsequently turned himself in at the Garfield County Jail, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. His bond was set at $100,000.
Shaw Lewis, 39, of Rifle died in the incident. The trooper, Charles Hiller, was treated and released from a hospital after suffering moderate injuries, and Burk also was taken to a hospital with injuries. Hiller was on the passenger side of the stopped vehicle when it was struck by the vehicle Burk was driving, authorities say.
