DUI patrols increase in Thanksgiving week

The Colorado State Patrol, Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Sheriff’s Department will have extra officers working during a six-day stretch around Thanksgiving in a crackdown on drunken-driving, authorities said Monday.

The stepped-up enforcement statewide starts at 6 p.m. today and runs until 3 a.m. Nov. 30, the first of three upcoming DUI-focused efforts in Colorado, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The State Patrol’s branches in Fruita and Montrose are among the participants.

Authorities said checkpoints are not planned.

“We’ll have extra troopers out dedicated for DUI enforcement and are not responding call-to-call,” said Master Trooper Bill Herrington, who’s assigned to Fruita Troop.

“Normally, we’ll have up to four people on during peak hours.”

Herrington said New Year’s Eve and the mid-December’s holiday office party seasons typically bring more DUI-related arrests than the Thanksgiving period.

Last year, seven people were killed in alcohol-related accidents in Colorado over Thanksgiving, roughly a third of all DUI fatalities during last year’s holiday season, according to state figures.
