Eagle sheriff: Man shot wife, then himself

A man in the El Jebel area shot his wife before turning a handgun on himself Saturday, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office said.

The office today confirmed that the deaths of Judi and Andrew Mazeika were a murder-suicide based on autopsy results, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Jessie Mosher.

Judi Mazeika, 54, was found dead in the side yard of the couple’s home on Vega Drive in Missouri Heights, which is in the El Jebel area in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Andrew Mazeika, 68, also was found in the yard and died after being taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

Mosher said a daughter under the age of 18 was not at home when the shooting took place.

Mosher said she had no information on a possible motive for the shooting. She said the Eagle sheriff’s office had never had domestic violence calls involving the couple.

The Aspen Times has reported that Andrew Mazeika filed for divorce last October in Garfield County, but that public records suggested the matter was resolved in February and the marriage was not dissolved.

Andrew Mazeika used to work seasonally for the Aspen Skiing Co., and Judi had done so last winter, said company spokesman Jeff Hanle.

“We had expected her back this winter,” he said.

He said he believed both of them had worked in ticketing.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. It’s very sad,” Hanle said.
