RSSOne killed, one injured in early-morning crash near Whitewater
One person is dead after a two-car accident near Whitewater.
An early-morning, two-vehicle crash today along Highway 50 near Whitewater claimed the life of one driver and caused serious injuries to the other, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Police said that a 1993 Lexus sedan traveling eastbound on Hwy. 50, near milepost 40, for some reason left the right side of the roadway. When the driver overcorrected, the Lexus crossed the eastbound lanes and the median, and was struck by a westbound 2011 Subaru Outback.
The driver of the Lexus was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The driver of the Subaru — a 45-year-old woman from Montrose who was wearing her seat belt — sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The identities of both drivers are being withheld pending notification of family.
The state patrol said the crash is still under investigation, and that drug use and excessive speed are being considered as contributing factors in the accident.
Hwy. 50 was partially closed for several hours because of the crash, which happened at about 7:30 a.m.
