Edible pot ban in Colorado unlikely but divisive

DENVER — A ban on edible marijuana in Colorado appears unlikely — but a proposal to ban pot brownies and other edibles is drawing objection from medical marijuana advocates who plan to object to the proposal.

A House Republican suggested making edible pot items such as sodas and lollipops illegal, saying children could accidentally consume them. But Rep. Cindy Acree has since backed off the proposal because many marijuana advocates pointed out that eating marijuana is safer than smoking it.

The state Department of Revenue is finalizing rules about how edible marijuana should be produced and labeled. Acree appears likely to ask for her bill to be shelved, though dozens of protesters are still expected at the Capitol today for a hearing on the bill.
