Education Association endorses Enos-Martinez for school board
Mesa Valley Education Association has endorsed District 51 school board member Cindy Enos-Martinez for District B.
Enos-Martinez is running against local business owner Ann Tisue in the Nov. 1 election. Jim Smyth, president of the teachers’ union-like association, said a group of MVEA members endorsed Enos-Martinez after interviewing the candidates in early September.
Smyth said the association made its selection because it has a four-year history with Enos-Martinez, who “believes in working with the teachers,” he said.
“Obviously, supporting 3B was huge,” he said of Enos-Martinez’s endorsement of Referred Measure 3B, the district’s mill levy override ballot measure that would increase property tax mills for local public education to raise about $12.5 million a year for six years.
Smyth said the MVEA members who interviewed the candidates asked each of them if they supported 3B. Enos-Martinez replied she did and Tisue and sole District A candidate Jeff Leany said they did not support the override, according to Smyth.
The association took no stance on Leany’s candidacy, which Smyth said the association does on a case-by-case basis with unopposed candidates.
The Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce endorsed Leany and Tisue last month. Chamber Chief Executive Officer and President Diane Schwenke said the selection committee for those endorsements will not reveal candidates’ answers to their interview questions, including whether they support 3B.
