Elk Creek mine expansion approved

The Bureau of Land Management has approved a modification of the Elk Creek Mine north of Somerset, extending the life of the mine by a year.

The lease modification allows expansion of the mine by 790 acres and about 3.8 million tons of coal.

Oxbow Mining, which owns the mine, has said the modification is needed to extend the life of the mine until about 2016. At the time, the company is looking into moving its mining operations to nearby Oak Mesa.

The mine employs 360 people and has been in operation since 2002, producing about 5 million tons of coal annually.
