ELN: Neal leads in ed board race

Marcia Neal had the lead, but no illusions about her bid for the 3rd Congressional District seat on the Colorado State Board of Education.

Neal, a former Grand Junction High School teacher and member of the School District 51 school board, was well ahead in her home base of Mesa County, according to early, unofficial returns that showed Neal, a Republican, garnering 38,046 votes in Mesa County and 17,433 for Jill Brake, a Democrat.

As of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, statewide results showed Neal with more than a five-point advantage over Brake, leading by 52.8 percent to 47.2 percent. Those results were with 64 percent of precincts reporting, including Brake home turf of Pueblo County, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

The board’s party makeup hangs in the balance, with it likely to tip to Democrat control if Brake should pull out the victory, Neal said.

Neal had run asking voters to consider options to the traditional school schedule.

Brake, a former member of the Pueblo School District 70 school board, supports using the Colorado Student Assessment Program results to more closely tailor instruction to their needs. She wants the public education system, from kindergarten to college, to mesh more closely together, said Brake, who describes herself as a believer in the whole-child concept of education.

The whole-child concept is an educational movement intended to ensure that all children are healthy, safe, engaged in learning, supported by caring adults and exposed to challenging classes that include arts, music, and other courses.

Technology, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills also are needed for 21st century education, Brake said.
