Escaped Arizona convict Daniel Renwick was recaptured in Rifle.

An escaped Arizona prison convict pleaded guilty this morning to two first-degree attempted murder charges after having fired numerous times at Rifle police officers Aug. 1.

“I’m guilty, your honor,” Daniel Renwick told Ninth Judicial District Court Judge James Boyd in a Glenwood Springs courtroom.

Renwick pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted murder after deliberation for having fired multiple shots that struck the car of Rifle officer William Van Teylingen. A second charge of first-degree attempted murder with extreme indifference was brought because two other officers were behind Van Teylingen’s vehicle.

Van Teylingen arrested Renwick in Rifle after ramming Renwick’s vehicle just after the shooting. He and another of the three officers involved were in court this morning but declined to comment afterward.
Renwick, 37, is scheduled to be sentenced April 22. He faces a presumptive sentencing range of eight to 24 years for each count, but the sentence for each count could go as high as 48 years for aggravating circumstances, such as the crimes of violence involved, Boyd told Renwick.

Deputy public defender Tina Fang said the intent of the agreement is for Renwick to serve his entire Colorado sentence in this state unless he seeks to be transferred to Arizona. Also, she said, prosecutors in Kingman, Ariz., have agreed not to file any escape charges in connection with the case.

Arizona authorities say Renwick and two others escaped from prison there on July 30. Renwick was alone when arrested, and the other two fugitives were arrested later in other states.
