Escapee turns self in after 2 days on the lam

Jesse Bowers

A Craig man who allegedly ran away from his parole office Wednesday and was wanted by the Colorado Department of Corrections was arrested Friday morning in Grand Junction.

Jesse J. Bowers, 36, was wanted on suspicion of fleeing after a parole-revocation hearing, said Katherine Sanguinetti, Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman. He had been verbally remanded into custody, and when he ran away he became an escapee.

Bowers was believed to have fled to Grand Junction, Sanguinetti said, so DOC officers and investigators staked out several locations. Friday morning, he called dispatch to turn himself in.

“The suspect knew one of our deputies from when he used to work in Craig,” said Mesa County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Lisa McCammon. “So, he called and wanted to turn himself in to that deputy.”

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department, Bowers peacefully turned himself in to Deputy Charles Warner at 538 Rockaway Ave.

In 2000, Bowers was sentenced on charges of second-degree assault in Mesa County and attempted burglary in Garfield County.

He served his sentence at Kit Carson Correctional Facility in Burlington before being paroled, Sanguinetti said.
