Ex Fruita teacher eyes probation in plea deal
A former Fruita 8/9 teacher who resigned after his arrest for soliciting topless photos from students must register as a sex offender and serve probation under a plea agreement formalized on Wednesday at the Mesa County Justice Center.
Randy Majors, 58, appearing free on bond before District Judge Thomas Deister, pleaded guilty on two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child, a class 4 felony. The District Attorney’s Office dismissed six charges under the deal, which calls for an unspecified probation period.
Deister can impose more conditions, including up to 90 days in the Mesa County Jail, two years in Mesa County work release, or community corrections.
Majors, a teacher for School District 51 for 19 years, resigned Jan. 31, nearly three months after he was placed on paid leave during an investigation by the Fruita Police Department. Majors was paid $13,873 during that period.
He was arrested Dec. 31. Majors became the focus of a police investigation Nov. 1, 2013, when the mother of a 16-year-old girl reported her daughter had received inappropriate Facebook messages. An arrest warrant affidavit identifies six girls, ranging in age from 15 to 17, who exchanged messages with Majors over several months.
Majors admitted he’d asked several girls for pictures of their “boobs,” the affidavit said.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 19
