Family of four dead after plane crash near Rifle

A family of four who were traveling in a private plane from Fort Collins to Utah died in a plane crash north of Rifle, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

The plane was last reported this morning nine miles north of Rifle near Baxter Peak.

Aerial searchers could not immediately scan the area because of heavy low-lying clouds.

Just after 11:30 a.m. this morning, searchers located a large debris field and determined there were no survivors in the wreckage.

The plane contained two adults and two children, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Civil Air Patrol and Classic Air assisted the Sheriff’s Office with the aerial search.

Ground crews are organizing to reach the site.
