Fatality possible in New Castle fire

Authorities are investigating a possible death at a mobile home fire just outside New Castle Sunday.

Brit McLin, chief of the Burning Mountains Fire Department, said it was his understanding a body was found, but he could not confirm that. A Garfield County Coroner’s Office representative was on the scene this morning but the office had no immediate comment.

McLin said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into the fire’s cause.

The fire occurred on Apple Drive in the Mountain Shadows subdivision late Sunday afternoon. McLin said the fire burned the middle of the mobile home and also an adjacent carport, but it wasn’t immediately apparent in which structure it began. He said the structures appear to be total losses.

McLin said neighbors reportedly had tried to enter the home but were driven back by smoke. Firefighters were called at 5:15 p.m., and the home was “pretty well fully engulfed” when they arrived, he said.

About 20 firefighters responded, including crews from Glenwood Springs and Rifle. McLin said he believes they remained on the scene until about 8 p.m.
