Authorities are currently monitoring rather than fighting a 5-acre fire burning in a remote area 15 miles northeast of Meeker.

The Milk Creek Fire was reported on Thursday and is burning 3.5 miles east of Yellowjacket Pass, south of private land in-holdings in the White River National Forest.

“The threat to private lands from this fire is low; however, as a contingency, crews have provided structure protection measures as well as numerous other protection measures in their planning,” the Forest Service said in a news release.

The fire is burning slowly in an aspen-conifer forest, and officials are managing it to reduce dead and downed trees and improve forest health. The White River Fire Module, which specializes in such fires, has been monitoring it and believes the fire won’t become large. However, some growth is expected in patches of subalpine fir surrounded by aspen that serves as a fire barrier.

Rio Blanco District Ranger Ken Coffin said in the release, “Safety of the public and firefighters is our primary concern on any wildland fire incident. Firefighting is a hazardous job and we always try to limit firefighter exposure to hazards. Given the remote location of this fire, moisture we’ve received this spring and summer, and our land management objectives, we don’t believe full suppression is warranted at this time.”

The public should expect to see possibly heavy smoke as the fire continues to burn in coming weeks, the Forest Service said.
