Fire breaks out on Watson Island

Fire department crews responded to the report of a fire along the Colorado River, near Watson Island.

The fire broke out just after 2 p.m., and thick smoke quickly clouded the skies in the south downtown area. High winds threatened to expand the fire that never burned more than five acres.

The Watson Island area is a known spot along the river for transient camps. The fire is thought to be burning in an area near the Botanical Gardens.

Despite high winds that threatened to expand the blaze, firefighters had the small fire contained within an hour, according Grand Junction Fire Department spokesman Mike Page. Page said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
