Orchard Mesa fire burns bright

A late-night fire could be seen glowing orange for miles Thursday from where it burned at 32 and C roads. According to fire officials, the fire consumed a vacant trailer on the property at 3198 C Road, which also contains the Defy Gravity gym and kids’ activities center

Radio traffic began reporting a structure fire at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. Multiple law enforcement and fire agencies responded to the scene, including the Grand Junction police and fire departments, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol. A big perimeter was established around the blaze, with roadblocks on 32 Road at B 1/2 and C 1/2 Roads and a block on C Road at 32 1/2 Road.

Central Orchard Mesa Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dave Gitchell said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Early reports of an explosion prompting the fire were unfounded, he said, and that they probably originated when trailer tires or small propane tanks became heated and pressurized, producing some low-level explosions as a result of the fire. There were no injuries associated with the fire, Gitchell said.
