Fire destroys home near New Castle

A fire destroyed a home near New Castle on Thursday afternoon, but firefighters managed to contain a resultant wildfire that threatened nearby homes.

The exact cause of the fire at 982 County Road 245 remains under investigation, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Department, which assisted in the response.

The home’s resident called dispatchers around 3 p.m. Thursday before quickly heading to safety. No one was injured in the fire, which also engulfed a detached garage and burned about an acre of land around the home.

Firefighters kept the blaze from climbing steep surrounding terrain lined with numerous homes, the Sheriff’s Department said. The Burning Mountains Fire Department was assisted by Glenwood Springs, Rifle and federal crews.

A helicopter from the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit inspected the site by air to make sure no embers ignited nearby hillsides.
