Fire destroys unoccupied home

Investigators Thursday evening still were investigating the cause of a midafternoon fire that destroyed an unoccupied Redlands home.

Firefighters from three different fire stations responded to a blaze that broke out about 3:15 p.m. at 318 Rosevale Road, Grand Junction Fire Department spokesman Mike Page said.

The fire was knocked down in about an hour but was expected to burn for several hours because it spread into the walls and concealed spaces, Page said.

Fire crews chose to fight the fire defensively because the home was not structurally sound and had been damaged prior to the fire, Page said.

The fire also brought down some electrical lines outside the home, prompting Xcel Energy to shut off power to the home.

The home is owned by Scott and Susan Shields, according to the Mesa County assessor’s website.
