Fire rages near Montrose-San Miguel line

Downed power lines sparked a fire near Norwood close to the Montrose-San Miguel county line this weekend.

Flames spread across 3,000 acres of oak brush and pine trees, according to fire officials. The fire temporarily closed part of Colorado Highway 145 and closed the San Miguel River from Deep Creek to Norwood Bridge, according to a Bureau of Land Management press release.

The fire blazed on both private and public land, but no structures were burned and no injuries were reported as of 9 p.m. Sunday. While residents living around Wrights Mesa, Brown Ranch, Iron Springs, Mac- Kensie Mesa and Sanborn Park Road were encouraged to check the status of the fire by calling 240-1070 and sign up for updates at, no homes were evacuated as of Sunday evening in those areas.

The Beaver Fire began at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday near Highway 145 and Goodenough Road, the BLM release said. Strong winds Saturday and Sunday spread the flames and two small campsites were evacuated Saturday afternoon, according to the release.

Approximately 180 firefighters battled the fire Sunday. Engines came from Norwood and Montrose, two hotshot crews came from Durango and Monument, an inmate hand crew came from Rifle, and engines and crews from Telluride and Norwood assisted, according to the BLM.
