Royal Gorge fire could be contained Friday

CANON CITY — Firefighters expect to have a fire burning near Canon City fully contained Friday.

The fire is now believed to be burning on 600 acres, rather than 700 as originally reported, due to better mapping. It was 65 percent contained Thursday morning.

Some evacuation orders are still in effect.

The fire about 100 miles south of Denver started Monday when a series of small blazes broke out. Officials say the fire was human-caused, but the source is still under investigation.

The fire has burned one home and barn and damaged five other homes.

A wildfire continues to burn on about 5,300 acres in the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Pike-San Isabel National Forest in south-central Colorado.
