Firefighters mobilize today at Grand Mesa Middle School
About 300 firefighters will be based out of Grand Mesa Middle School, awaiting orders to battle wildfires in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.
The Bureau of Land Management will operate the mobilization center and firefighters are expected begin arriving this week, BLM spokesman Christopher Joyner said.
The Grand Valley is “an ideal centralized location” a base of operations against wildfires in the affected states, Joyner said.
The agency is asking that the public not bring donations to the center, Joyner said, noting that public support for firefighters is appreciated.
