Fireworks fix can still be found, with drive

Wildfires and severe drought conditions have led officials across nearly every Western Slope community to cancel their annual fireworks shows. Although skies above Mesa County will be quiet tonight, residents willing to drive can still satisfy their need for patriotic pyrotechnics.

Here are the places we could find in the region:

The 61st annual Rotary Club fireworks event is at Jorgensen Park on East Tomichi Avenue off U.S. Highway 50. Festivities start at 7 a.m. with a hot air balloon rally, and at 4 p.m. downtown Gunnison will offer a beer garden, food court, kids zone and live music by Tyler Hansen and Grant Farm. Fireworks are free and start at 9:15 p.m. and are best viewed from Jorgensen Park or the adjacent Legion Park. For more information, call Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association at 970-901-6215.

Fourth of July festivities kick off with a parade at 9:30 a.m., which is open to public participation. Swanny City Park, at the corner of West 400 North and North 100 West on the west side of U.S. Highway 191, will feature a festival with games, activities and prizes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a free swim at the recreation and aquatics center from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Fireworks start at dark or around 10 p.m. and will be choreographed to music playing on The Vault 104.1 or 102.1 FM. For more information, call the Chamber of Commerce at 435-259-7814.

Lake Powell

Bullfrog Marina, located off of Utah Highway 276, is hosting its biggest Fourth of July fireworks show ever today at 10 p.m. Fireworks will be shot off directly over the water, allowing for viewing either on land or on the water. Boat rentals are available at various prices and lodging starts at $185 per night. Campgrounds for both RVs and tents are available by reservation or on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information about the show or to make reservations, call 817-333-5105 or visit
