First Mesa County West Nile death in three years confirmed

An elderly Mesa County man has died from complications of West Nile Virus, according to the Mesa County Health Department.

He is the first Mesa County resident to die as a result of contracting the virus since 2010, according to health department records.

The man was likely infected in late August or early September this year. His symptoms included coughing, chills, fever and body aches, and he later developed encephalitis.

So far this year, six Mesa County residents have been diagnosed with West Nile Virus. Those numbers do not include people who may have contracted the virus but did not have the infection medically confirmed.
