Five more businesses snared in liquor stings

Five Mesa County businesses were ticketed over the weekend for selling alcohol to minors in what was a second law enforcement sweep in as many weeks.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Department and State Liquor Enforcement visited some 100 business, according to Grand Junction police. These businesses were cited:

Wine Country Inn, 777 Grande River Drive, Palisade

Black Bear Diner, 624 Rae Lynn Drive, Grand Junction

Thai Chili, 2536 Rimrock Ave., Grand Junction

Kannah Creek Brewery, 1960 N. 12th St., Grand Junction

Carino’s Italian Restaurant, 2480 U.S. Highway 6 & 50, Grand Junction

Businesses that were cited must go before the city of Grand Junction or State Liquor hearing board, which will determine possible sanctions ranging from fines to temporary suspension of liquor licenses, authorities said.

In lieu of possible suspension of city licenses, businesses can be fined 20 percent of the operation’s expected gross revenue over the time period of a proposed suspension; a minimum of $200 but no more than $5,000, according to Grand Junction City Clerk Stephanie Tuin.

Earlier this month, authorities announced 10 other businesses were busted in a series of similar undercover stings. The operations are funded by a grant received by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department for enforcement of underage drinking laws.

None of the businesses cited over the weekend has had other violations over the past year, and revocation of a license would only be considered for a business with repeat violations.

Aside from business compliance checks, officers Saturday who were patrolling specifically for house parties issued 24 summonses to minors in possession of alcohol, authorities said.
