Florida man, 63, faces charges after being shot in burglary attempt

A Florida man shot in the legs early Monday after he allegedly tried to burglarize a home in Gateway faces arrest upon his release from St. Mary’s Hospital, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department said today.

William Bailey, 63, was listed in stable condition today as investigators are pursuing a warrant for Bailey’s arrest on suspicion of attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and second-degree trespass, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

Investigators believe Bailey knew the owners, and specifically targeted a home at 19200 Highway 141, where deputies were called out at 12:31 a.m. Monday on a report of a burglary in progress.

Deputies arrived to find Bailey lying on the ground outside the home, wounded in both legs from a shotgun.

“Nothing in the investigation of this incident leads the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office to believe that any criminal charges are appropriate for the homeowner,” the release said.
