Free meals, car washes given to veterans
In addition to taking part in Veterans Day observances across the Grand Valley on Thursday, veterans can get free meals and lower prices on sporting goods.
Also in recognition of Veterans Day, entrance fees will be waived for all visitors to Colorado National Monument. Veterans and active-duty personnel also can get a 20 percent discount at the visitor center.
Applebee’s restaurants across the nation, including the store at 711 Horizon Drive, are offering free Veterans Days meals to veterans and active-duty personnel Thursday.
The restaurant chain last year served more than 1 million military men and women, and the company expects that number to be higher this year.
Sporting-goods outfitter Cabela’s, which has a store in Mesa Mall, is offering employee pricing on Thursday and Friday to active-duty personnel, veterans and law enforcement, firefighters and emergency-medical services personnel under its Hometown Heroes program.
Qualified customers can obtain discounts by providing government-issued identification at the check-out register.
Veterans and current military personnel also can get their cars washed for free at Redlands Canyon View Car Wash, 2258 Broadway. There will be coffee and doughnuts available, and donations can be made to the National Wounded Warrior Project.
Grand Junction, Fruita and Palisade city halls and Mesa County offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. The trash- and recycling-collection schedule in Grand Junction will be unaffected by the holiday.
Parking in downtown Grand Junction will be free at meters and in the city parking garage Thursday.
