Freshman Prater leads Mesa men’s golf team in first RMAC tourney
Colin Prater may be a freshman, but he led the Colorado Mesa men’s golf team again.
Prater shot the Mavericks’ lowest score for the second time this season as CMU finished fifth in the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament of the 2013-14 season on Tuesday at Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango.
Prater placed eighth with a 2-over-par 215. He shot a 4-under-par 67 in the final round of the three-round tournament.
Junior teammate Sean Robbins was ninth with 216 strokes.
Colorado School of Mines won the team title with three of the top 10 individuals. The Orediggers, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II by golfstat.com, scored 846.
Colorado Christian took second, Western New Mexico was third and Regis placed fourth. Mesa tied with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs for fifth with 881.
Steven DaSilva of Regis and Jordan Arndt of Mines tied for first at 5-under 208.
Trenton Schwehr tied for 23rd with 224 strokes, Adam Griffith carded a 226, and Trevor McKune shot 245 for the Mavericks.
Colorado Mesa tied for 14th place out of 18 teams in the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate Invitational at Coldwater Golf Course in Phoenix.
Sara Swaney led the Mavericks with a 13-over-par 157. She tied for 24th place. Loren Forney and Zoe Woodworth each scored 166. Rachel Cavalier shot 167, and Taylor Walters shot 175.
Chico State (Calif.) University won the team title with a two-round score of 613. The Wildcats won by one stroke over Oklahoma Christian University and Northeastern State (Okla.) University.
Mesa tied host Western New Mexico with a team score of 656.
California State-Monterey Bay teammates Audra Kepler and Arinda Bhanaraksa shared medalist honors with a 3-over 147.
