Jake Lynch’s pass to Zach Griggs was broken up at the goalline as time ran out at Stocker Stadium on Thursday and Douglas County defeated Fruita, 20-14.

Just prior, Douglas County, on fourth-and-4 from its own 37, took the lead with 51 seconds remaining when Trey Smith took a screen pass 63 yards for a touchdown.

But Fruita, which had taken a 14-13 lead with 1:45 left, came back and, in 45 seconds, drove the ball 66 yards to the Douglas County 10. On second-and-goal, however, Griggs could not haul in a pass between two DC defenders as time expired.

Fruita is 1-1; DC is 1-0

Vince Grasso rushed for 83 yards on 16 carries for Fruita.
