Fruita fireworks show cancelled

Due to extreme fire danger, the City of Fruita has cancelled its annual fireworks show scheduled to take place July 3. Instead, the city will host a free barbecue and concert on July 4th at the Civic Center Pavilion Stage.

Fruita city officials consulted with local emergency officials and determined that it was in the public’s best interest and safety to cancel the show. The grass and shrubs near the launch site are extremely dry and could place several subdivisions, BLM and local trails in danger if ignited, the city said in a press release Thursday.

The city also wants to remind Fruita residents that a fire ban is in effect which includes the lighting of personal fireworks.

In the release, Mayor Lori Buck said, “While we are very disappointed that extremely dry conditions are necessitating that we cancel the fireworks show this year, we want to still provide an opportunity for the community to come out,  celebrate our nation’s independence, and really enjoy our small town atmosphere. I hope everyone will join us on July 4th for a free barbecue and ice cream at the regularly scheduled Thursday Night concert featuring the Centennial Band.”
