Fruita, GJ fall in first round of 5A state soccer playoffs

Montrose’s Ruben Mendoza collides Wednesday with the Canon City goalkeeper in the Indians’ 3-1 victory in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The extra day didn’t help.

The Fruita Monument and Grand Junction boys soccer teams lost in the first round of the Class 5A state playoff a day after both teams were stuck in Silverthorne because of weather and travel conditions.

Bear Creek defeated Fruita Monument 3-0 and Fairview eliminated Grand Junction 3-1 on Wednesday. Both games were originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but Fruita and Grand Junction had travel delays, postponing the games 22 hours.

Grand Junction captain Tim Hofer knocked Fairview goalie Philip Killeen out of the game on a play in front of the Knights’ goal with 2:45 left in the first half. Just over a minute later, Hofer beat backup Fairview goalie Alan Scheuermann to tie it 1-1.

Killeen returned in the second half and made a crucial save on a Hofer shot that helped the Knights advance in the 5A playoffs with a wind-blown 3-1 victory over the Tigers.

Bear Creek (11-5) broke open a 1-0 game with two goals in the second half. Sam Heller scored two goals for the Bears. Tyler Kenagy made eight saves in goal for the Wildcats (6-8-1), who qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2005.
