Fruita resident tried to assist victims of Monday carjacking

The woman had just parked her car at a gas pump at the Go-fer Foods in Fruita when she heard a commotion at another pump.

“I heard her say, ‘No, no, get out.’ I looked over there, and there was this man in her car, and she was hitting him and trying to honk the horn,” said the Fruita resident, who didn’t want her name used.

Thinking she was witnessing a kidnapping, the witness ran over and asked the woman in the car if she was all right. She shook her head no, so the witness stood in front of the car, thinking she could deter the man behind the wheel from leaving. Then he gunned the engine and the car lurched forward.

“I thought, ‘OK, he’s going to run me over,’ ” she said, deciding to move out of the way.

The vehicle, with California license plates, left the gas station with the woman still inside. She was able to jump out at the corner of Plum Street and Aspen Avenue.

The witness checked on the woman, then called 911.

“You expect something like this in California, not in Fruita, Colorado,” the witness said.
