Fruita teen is OK after separation from Scout group

A 16-year-old boy from Fruita who was reported missing in the Meeker area while on a camping trip with fellow Boy Scouts was found Sunday morning unharmed, authorities said.

The boy, who was not identified, called his mother about 8:30 a.m. Sunday to tell her he had “found some people that helped him to the lodge,” which was Trappers Lake Lodge & Resort, a news release from the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Department said.

The boy was then reunited with his father, who had joined search efforts to find his son.

The boy was reported missing at 1 a.m. Saturday when two Scout leaders went to the Sheriff’s Department’s office in Meeker. They said they hadn’t seen the teenager since Friday afternoon in the Bailey Lake area about 21 miles east of Meeker.

Members from the Rio Blanco Search and Rescue team, volunteers from Westlands Ranch in the Meeker area, and two volunteers with Search and Rescue Dogs of Colorado took part in the search, the release said.
